Made with Purpose

Sure symbol of God's love.

You are no accident.

Whether our parents planned for us or not- God knew the time of our birth long before we were even a twinkle in our parents eye.

Every time I sit and just ponder God’s love, I find myself shaking my head in wonderment.  I can’t imagine it; I don’t understand it.

We don’t see love like that here.  We catch glimpses-snippets-flares- but it is fleeting- doesn’t last.

1 John 4:13-19

13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

19 We love because he first loved us.

Imagine love that never gives up.  Even under the harshest conditions.

Love that ignores outright rejection.  I choose other things over God all the time- every day- and yet He perseveres in His love for me.

His patience waits years while we dabble in things He knows will make us unhappy.  He has to watch in agony and grief as we enter into situations that bring pain and anguish, suffering and despair.

And yet He waits.

He made us to be connected to Him.  To live in communion with Him always.

To never live a moment without being in His presence- feeling the security of our identity in His love and companionship.

But He isn’t demanding or forceful in His love.

He could be.

Yet He allows us to choose.

He gives us the freedom to cause Him terrible pain in our rejection.

And yet, I must admit, many times when I choose other things over Him- I don’t consider the pain I am causing Him.

My heart doesn’t break, many times I haven’t even felt guilty about “cheating” on Him with other loves, other idols.

Such Lovely White Flowers

Andrew Murray talks about our unique connection to God in his book, Waiting on God.  I will paraphrase.

We are made to bring God glory.  To live in constant communion and connection with God- lacking nothing because through God we would have everything we needed.

But through sin, that communion was broken.  Now we have no hope of recovering what we have lost without God’s mercy and grace.

God brings redemption and carries it out daily in our lives- moment by moment.  He works in us as we are consensual to the process.

Andrew Murray puts it this way: “…he has and can have nothing that he does not each moment receive; and waiting on God is just as indispensable, and must be just as continuous and unbroken, as the breathing that maintains his natural life.”

Until we return to what we were made for, we will never find peace.

We will spend this whole life chasing mirages.

As soon as we feel it is within our grasp, it will evaporate like mist.

Perfect peace comes only when we enter into continual communion with our God.  He made us to be with Him always.

We are only separated from Him as we choose to be- when we allow other things to steal our affections and will.

I want to fall in love with God.  To enter into unbroken communion from this day forward.

Lord, make us malleable in your hands.  May we seek communion with you that is unbroken by distractions with the trappings of this world.  May all other loves fall away as we gaze upon you.  Oh Lord, we cannot grasp the heights nor depths of your love; you defy our human understanding.  As we ponder your love and mercy, may our reaction be one of joy and thanksgiving, of willing and affectionate seeking after you.  May gratitude for all you have done permeate our lives and be a testimony to those around us. We pray in the name of our intercessor and friend, Jesus Christ, Amen.

He Dances Over Me

A Soft Light on a Pink Tulip
Do you ever have a hard time picturing God rejoicing over you?  You feel His judgment and condemnation- but sometimes is it hard to picture God embracing us- lovingly guiding us- and rejoicing when we rejoice?

I struggle with this- as a perfectionist I have the tendency to beat myself up over every mistake- every way I feel I am not measuring up- living in a perpetual state of disappointment in myself and feeling sure that God sees me the same way.

I spent some time yesterday looking up every passage that I could find where it says that God delights in me.  But then, my hubby mentioned the prodigal son-I thought- how could I forget?

Luke 15:11-24

11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

We forget- how deep the Father’s love is- for us.  He created us- we have the potential to bring wondrous joy to our God- the one who created us- and to bring Him deepest sorrow.  But His love is not like ours.  It does not lessen or depend on our performance.

His love is Perfect. Love that sacrificed for an enemy.  In Romans 5, Paul makes it clear- God sent His Son to die for us and bring reconciliation- while we were living in sin- God stepped over the gulf and lovingly embraced us through the blood of His Son.

No greater love than this.

Take some time and let God love you today.  Let these Words of Truth embrace you- as God whispers lovingly in your ear- You are precious to me.  I rejoice over you; I delight in you.

Zephaniah 3:17-The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you;in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.

Jeremiah 9:24-but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.

Deuteronomy 30:8-10- Then the Lord your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The Lord will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your ancestors, 10 if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

2 Samuel 22:20-He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.

Psalm 22:8- “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”

Psalm 35:27-May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.”

Psalm 147:11-the Lord delights in those who fear him,who put their hope in his unfailing love.

Psalm 149:4-For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.

Proverbs 3:11-12-My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

Proverbs 11:20-The Lord detests those whose hearts are perverse, but he delights in those whose ways are blameless.

Proverbs 12:22-The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.

Isaiah 42:1-“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.

Isaiah 62:4-No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate.
But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah;for the Lord will take delight in you, and your land will be married.

If you are like me, maybe as you read these verses- you begin to feel as though God’s love is conditional, based on how we perform- and hastily withdrawn when we don’t uphold our end of the bargain.

But we must keep in our mind the God we know who did not spare His own Son- but sent Him to die for us when we were lost in our sin.  He reached out to us- full of compassion and love-He wanted to make a way, but we must choose Him.

Accept the love He has poured out into our hearts and lives and say, “Yes, Lord-I accept this gift of grace you have lavishly given.  Thank you, praise be to God.”

Let’s say yes to Him today.  To see Him as the God who loves with passion as well as judges righteously and hates evil.

What A Splash Of Life

Lord, sometimes it is hard for us to understand you.  To grasp the heights and depths of your love while at the same time fearing you.  We see your wrath against sin- your desire for righteousness and justice- and we are aware of how sinful we are- the ways that we don’t meet the mark.  Reveal to us your tender mercies today- remind us how your grace has been poured out into our lives- not as something we deserve- but as a gift. May we embrace you and revere you- worship you and humbly approach your throne today. Thank you Lord, for love that defies all human logic- that reaches us in our most wretched.  All Praise and Glory is yours now and forever.  Amen.

How Great the Father’s Love for Us

Cross, Sunset, Holy Island, Northumberland

Every VeggieTales show ends with these words- remember, God made you special and He loves you very much.

I was thinking about that this morning, and I just said to myself several times, God loves me.  God loves me.  How often do we let that truth sink in and spread like a balm over every area of our life?

God- the creator of the universe, the great I AM, Alpha and Omega- He loves us.

He sent His Son to die for us.  Today, as we prepare for Palm Sunday and for Easter- I pray that we will take some time to ponder the love and sacrifice of our Savior.

Sometimes, just meditating on a song- singing it, listening to it, and letting the words soak in- worshiping God and remembering His Sacrifice- it gives me an opportunity to stop what I am doing and remember- and be thankful-for all that God has done.

How Great the Father’s Love for Us

How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Think About His Love

Think about his love…how often do we do that?  Just contemplate how much God loves us, how much He loves you.

We sang this song in church today it evoked many memories:

        Praise to the Lord,
the Almighty, the King of creation.
	O my soul, praise him,
for he is thy health and salvation!
	All ye who hear,
	now to his temple draw near;
	join me in glad adoration!

        Praise to the Lord,
	who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
	surely his goodness
and mercy here daily attend thee.
	Ponder anew
	what the Almighty can do,
who with his love doth befriend thee.

        Praise to the Lord!
O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath,
come now with praises before him!
	Let the amen sound from his people again;
	gladly forever adore him.

It reminded me of all that God has done on my behalf, and that He is worthy of my Praise.  I felt so humbled and yet treasured at the same time.

God has drawn near to us.  He made us in His Image.  He sent His Son to die for us- so that we might have forgiveness and life eternal if we put our trust in Him and acknowledge our need for Him.  So mysterious- yes too wonderful for me to comprehend.

I do not understand that kind of love- we don’t see it much here on earth.  Love completely devoid of self- an outpouring of passionate feeling regardless of whether those feelings are reciprocated.

When we turn our eyes upon God, upon Jesus, we can find peace in affliction, hope in despair, and the strength to endure.  He promises that He is faithful.

So I pray that today you spend a little time pondering His kind of love.  Crack open that Bible and see His love in action.  One more song to leave you with today.

Think about His love, think about His goodness
Think about His Grace that’s brought us through
For as high as the heavens above
So great is the measure of our Father’s love
Great is the measure of our Father’s love
