Blessed Be Your Name

Singing is one of my favorite things to do when I am having a bad day.  Sometimes I try to distance myself from the comfort that the music offers- I might listen to a few songs silently at first- just soaking up the words and music.  Then, I hear one of those songs- you know what I’m talking about- those rare songs that move you every time you hear it.  Maybe it moves you to tears, maybe anger, maybe it makes you smile thinking about a special memory or friend.

This song “Blessed Be Your Name” reminds me why I am a Christian.  If you have never heard it, here are the words.

Blessed Be Your Name In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow Blessed be Your name

Blessed Be Your name When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness Blessed Be Your name

Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s ‘all as it should be’ Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name On the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name

You give and take away You give and take away
My heart will choose to say Lord, blessed be Your name

Every time I hear this song I get emotional- because it makes me remember those dark days filled with sadness and doubt- times when I was angry at God and wondered where He was and how He could bear to see people suffer.  Then I remember those blissfully happy times- when I got married, when my children were born, when I finished my first marathon- and how I felt God there with me, enjoying those times of celebration.

This song reminds me that I wouldn’t change living my life submitted to God- endeavoring each day to draw closer to Him, to read my Bible- to pray, to seek understanding- to spend time with Him.  Because my life is better with Him in it.  I am a better Mom, a better wife, a better friend, a better sister, a better daughter- all of it.

I believe it takes more strength to admit that we can’t do it on our own.  That we need a Savior.

His Name is worthy of praise.

I was reading Psalms 19 at dinner tonight (I try to read a Psalm a day to the kids- either at lunch or dinner) Here is the last portion of it that really spoke to me.

7 The instructions of the LORD are perfect,
      reviving the soul.
The decrees of the LORD are trustworthy,
      making wise the simple.
8 The commandments of the LORD are right,
      bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are clear,
      giving insight for living.
9 Reverence for the LORD is pure,
      lasting forever.
   The laws of the LORD are true;
      each one is fair.
10 They are more desirable than gold,
      even the finest gold.
   They are sweeter than honey,
even honey dripping from the comb.
11 They are a warning to your servant,
a great reward for those who obey them.

12 How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart?
Cleanse me from these hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant from deliberate sins!
      Don’t let them control me.
Then I will be free of guilt
      and innocent of great sin.

14 May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
   be pleasing to you,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

This was such a great ending to my day.  To be reminded that God’s law is not meant to box me in, but to free me!  He longs to set me free from the burden of my sin and the need to do it all on my own- to rest in His strength instead- to trust in Him.

One day at a time, one step at a time.
